Temescal Canyon: Quick Escape from the Coast
Temescal Canyon: Quick Escape from the Coast
Drive toward Pacific Palisades, turn onto Temescal Canyon Road, park in the small lot (arrives early on weekends). The trail threads through manzanita and eucalyptus, crosses a creek bed that's dry most of the time, then climbs through chaparral with occasional views of the Pacific through breaks in the brush.
The canyon broadens as you go up. The scent of pine thickens. At the turn-around point on a good day, a view opens to the ocean's western light. It's not a dramatic summit — more of a gradual reward. The real pleasure is the transition from coastal concrete to actual nature in about ten minutes.
Late winter through early spring for green hills and running creek beds. By late summer it's dusty and the city noise carries further. Moderate difficulty with some steep switchbacks. Sturdy shoes, water, hat, sunscreen. No shade at the top.
